Employment Screening and Reference Checking

Unethical or dishonest representatives can inflict serious damage to client and brokerages. NIBA recommend members use the following two new handbooks on employment screening and reference checking. Both were developed by ASIC and Standards Australia in close consultation with a panel of industry representatives. The handbooks provide employers with a comprehensive guide to employing entrusted persons – in our case insurance brokers – to ensure that they who they say they are and can do what they claim to be capable of.

The Employment Screening Handbook outlines how a screening and probity check should be conducted during the employment process. The standard is risk management based, which protects the organisation against physical and reputational damage by dishonest, incompetent or unethical people.

The reference checking handbook for the financial services industry has been produced in joint consultation with industry, including NIBA. The handbook provides in simple language the process to be adopted when engaging individuals or contractors. The handbook includes the necessary consent forms as well as tips for implementation.

Both publications are available free of charge from the ASIC website.
