NSW Government rushes through SES Levy

Legislation that was bundled up in the total Budget Bill and passed without any industry consultation gives effect to the NSW Government’s decision to fund the State Emergency Services (SES) by way of levy on insurance policies effective from 1 July 2009.

The levy is expected to raise around $40 million, and be administered in similar fashion to the NSW Fire Services Levy.

The ICA has already proposed an amendment to collection arrangements so that the FSL and SES levies could be closer aligned. Under this proposal invoices would show only one amount payable for the combined Fire and Emergency Services levy.

The Brumby Labor Government has accepted in principle the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission's recommendation to replace the Fire Services Levy with a progressive property-based levy and introduce concessions for low-income earners. Treasurer John Lenders said the Fire Services Levy was already under review by the Brumby Labor Government and he would use the existing review process to determine the best model for the new levy. "The Brumby Labor Government is taking the tough decisions and doing the hard work to keep Victoria fire ready and safe," Mr Lenders said.
