Insurance & Risk Professional, October 2009

This is the first edition of Insurance & Risk Professional under the new editorial arrangement with Mahlab Media.

Mahlab Media, an experienced team with a passion for custom publishing, have been working closely with NIBA to refresh the design and content of our popular publication. We hope that you’re pleased with the results.

Our new editor Roslyn Alderton has lots of vibrant new ideas and energy. She is backed by Nicole Dixon who will ensure that our advertisers are looked after in the most professional and friendly way.

We’re aiming to introduce articles that are more relevant to a broader spectrum of readers, including business advice for smaller brokers and career help for young professionals. You’ll also find that most of the articles will be tighter and easier to read.

While some aspects have changed, you’ll still see many familiar features as well. It’s all designed to ensure that you are up-to-date with the latest news and issues, in a publication that is pertinent, engaging and trustworthy.

What a hectic couple of months it’s been for other reasons as well.

NIBA Convention

The 27th NIBA Convention was a big success just a few weeks ago at Sydney’s Darling Harbour. The comprehensive program had something for everyone.

Our intention was to engage as much dialogue as possible on the big issues and bring the industry together as one ... for the good of all. From feedback received it seems we achieved that aim admirably.

Fire Services Levy

Insurance tax has also been in the news again, for all the wrong reasons. NIBA condemned the Brumby government for again hiking up the fire services levy, creating an absurd situation in rural Victoria where people are forced to pay more in taxes and charges than for the actual insurance policy.

The issue received more media coverage than ever before and questions were raised in Parliament on behalf of angry policyholders. NIBA has been on the front foot with this for over a decade now and we won’t give up until we see changes that don’t penalise those prudent enough to take out insurance protection.

Much is happening to shape our busy worlds and with this edition of the Insurance & Risk Professional, now is the time to sit back and read about it. Be informed by news and views.

Be inspired by leaders in the industry. And be equipped to do business in our dynamic profession.
