NIBA's newest team member Emilie Webster shares her top 5 tips for insurance broking success.

Emilie Webster has joined NIBA in a newly developed role of Education and Broking Services Consultant.

Emilie has an outstanding background for this new NIBA role. A former director of an all-female insurance brokerage in western Victoria, Emilie also served on the Board of Insight Insurance Brokers Association and is NIBA College’s highest-ever academic achiever.

Here are Emilie’s top 5 tips for achieving success in your broking career:

1. Invest in continual education
In today’s world, continual education is an important key to success. Why?

  • Brokerages are able to maintain a competitive edge in our industry’s constantly changing environment.
  • Account executives are able to broaden their knowledge so they can keep up with employer expectations and industry change.

2. Focus on networking and building business relationships
Relationships with other professionals in the industry are intended to benefit our clients and enhance the service we provide. Take time to consider:

  • How can you make yourself easier to do business with?
  • Are you so caught up in your own world and priorities that you never take time to stand in other people’s shoes?

3. Improve client loyalty
Client loyalty is driven by after-sales support and service experiences you provide. By just sending out a renewal tax invoice to clients, you are not offering a service but a commodity that may be bought off the internet. Remember to:

  • Stand behind the products you offer with excellent service support;
  • Go the extra mile – the little things you do can have a big influence on a clients loyalty;
  • Do everything possible to make it convenient for clients to do business with you.

4. Follow up in writing
Following up with correspondence on what you’ve discussed at a meeting or on the phone doesn’t just document the conversation to meet legal and good business practices, it also;

  • Keeps others informed and up to date;
  • Gives you a chance to reiterate and confirm your understanding;
  • Adds value to your service.

5. Recognise and appreciate
Everyone wants to be recognised and appreciated for their efforts. Remember to:

  • Praise people that provide you support;
  • Say ’thank you’. They are simple words that can make the world of difference.
