Claims costs from Melbourne and Perth storms top $1.8 billionBy Jeanette Stephen The recovery continues for many families and businesses after the severe weather that struck Melbourne on March 6 and, only weeks later, in Perth on March 22. The latest claim figures from the catastrophic thunderstorms have been released through the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA). Across Melbourne, 125,178 claims have been assessed at a cost of $915 million, while 143,451 claims have been received to date in Perth, reaching a subtotal of $932.4 million. The ICA said about 60% of initial property assessments had been completed in Perth, alongside 75% of vehicle claims. Assessment completion figures were not available for Melbourne yet. IAG subsidiary SGIO updated its claim figures from the Perth storm to report more than 19,000 motor and home claims lodged, including the inspection of 8,500 vehicles. “Our assessors have been out in the field processing claims by severity of the damage and the bulk of the claims has now been processed,” said SGIO spokesperson Rob Cory. “We’ve seen a lot of damage (in homes) by water inundation but a lot of the damage has been from hailstones on the vehicles.” Suburbs in the northern half of the Perth metropolitan area were among the most badly affected by the hailstorm, considered the worst to hit Western Australia in several decades. As many as 90,000 homes were left without power while hail stones the size of golf balls ripped through rooftops, accompanied by flash flooding and landslides from heavy rains. In Melbourne, the worst affected regional areas were Rowville, Scoresby and Lysterfield, according to the RACV. The supercell storm pelted the city and its surrounding districts with 10cm-wide hailstones, flooding and severe wind gusts exceeding 100km/h. Return to Broker Buzz |
