The benefits of further study
Gemma Gould, a broker with Sydney firm MGA, is currently completing the last module of an Advanced Diploma of Financial Services at NIBA College. She spoke with Broker Buzz about balancing work with study and her hopes for the future.
Why did you decide to start studying again? I have been studying with NIBA since I started working for my father back in 2002. I decided to pursue further study because I felt that it would give me some leverage in the industry as well as enable me to build on my skills.
How do you fit study around your current commitments? In order to meet my study commitments I worked out what times I was the most productive. I found that in the evenings during the week I was more focused than on the weekends, even though I had less time on my hands.
How supportive are your family and workplace? I work for my father, who is an Authorised Representative for MGA. He has always been a huge advocate for further education within the insurance industry. I think, ultimately, I have benefited from having my father as my boss. It has allowed me the flexibility to not only pursue further studies, but also the added advantage of having a mentor who has been in the industry for 40 years.
How do you think further study will benefit your career? I have really enjoyed the challenges of the study material. It has afforded me the opportunity to learn various aspects of the insurance industry as well as other skills, such as small business management. I appreciate that, in life, what you put into something is what you will get out of it. So for me, furthering my education and continually broadening my skills base will lead to a prosperous career in the insurance broking industry.
