Many farmers expect to be forced to cut their property insurance cover, after the NSW Government this week made insurance policy holders responsible for funding the State Emergency Service (SES).
The new levy will be paid by property owners via their insurance policies.
For years insurance policies in NSW have included a controversial levy to raise funds for the State’s fire services.
The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) and rural firefighters want the funding to be collected through local council rates, because many people are not paying insurance any more, leaving the growing levy burden to those who do.
The fire levy has risen 14 per cent in three years.
The latest levy move supports the SES, which before the November mini-Budget was facing a potential funding cut.
