Bomb Cyclone Hits NSW, Leaving Thousands Without Power and at Flood Risk
NIBA recognises the severe impact of the coastal low weather system currently affecting several parts of New South Wales and stands in support of the communities impacted.
Communities are being hit by what meteorologists call a "bomb cyclone", bringing with it destructive winds, torrential rain and the growing threat of flash flooding.
Emergency warnings remain in place for multiple regions, with parts of the Central and South Coasts recording up to 130 mm of rain overnight. More than 35,000 homes and businesses are currently without power, and over 1,000 properties, particularly in the Hunter Valley, Central Coast, Illawarra and South Coast, are also experiencing widespread internet outages.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that damaging wind gusts will persist, impacting the South Coast, Mid North Coast, Northern Tablelands, and border ranges.
Meanwhile, rising river levels have prompted fresh concerns in Nowra and Terara, where the Shoalhaven River is expected to exceed the minor flood level of 2.30 metres around midday.
As the storm continues to lash coastal regions, the NSW Government is urging residents to prioritise their safety and stay informed via official emergency channels. Support is available for those affected, including financial relief through the East Coast Severe Weather Personal Hardship Assistance program. Applications have been extended until Monday 21 July 2025, with further information available via the Service NSW website.
To assist communities in sharing critical recovery information, authorities have released an updated online toolkit. It includes details on financial assistance, business and primary producer support, mental health services, and tips for staying safe and healthy during recovery.
NIBA commends the tireless efforts of emergency services and local volunteers and urges everyone in the region to prioritise safety.
