NIBA welcomes the announcement by the Cook Government of $1.9 million in funding to support bushfire mitigation activities across 15 local government areas in Western Australia.

This funding, delivered through the Mitigation Activity Fund (MAF), will enable the implementation of 272 bushfire mitigation treatments, including mechanical works to reduce fuel levels, the establishment of fire breaks, and planned burns where appropriate. Since its inception in 2017, the program has allocated nearly $62 million towards reducing bushfire risks, helping to safeguard communities in high-risk areas.

NIBA CEO, Richard Klipin, commended the WA State Government for prioritising community safety:

“This significant investment in bushfire mitigation reflects a proactive and collaborative approach to managing the risks associated with natural disasters. Insurance brokers see firsthand the devastating impact that bushfires can have on lives, businesses, and communities. Strengthening resilience to natural disasters is critical, and NIBA fully supports initiatives that mitigate risk and enhance community safety.”

As the peak body representing the insurance broking profession, NIBA is committed to working with governments, communities, and stakeholders to promote risk awareness and resilience. Bushfire mitigation programs like the MAF are essential in reducing the severity and frequency of natural disaster losses, enabling communities to recover more effectively and ensuring the ongoing sustainability of insurance markets.

NIBA applauds the WA Government’s ongoing leadership in addressing bushfire risk and encourages the continuation of similar programs to protect communities across Australia.
