#NIBA2020: The Mind Strength Method

High performance coach, clinical psychologist and CEO and Founder of the Sydney Anxiety Clinic, Dr Jodie Lowinger, introduced delegates to The Mind Strength Method on day two of the 2020 NIBA Virtual Convention.

Dr Lowinger’s method outlines four steps to curb anxiety, conquer worry and build resilience, for peak performance, and a winning mindset.

In her presentation, Dr Lowinger identified the impact of anxiety, stress, worry, mood and burnout on performance, and outlined the return on investment of building a high performance mindset.

She said, that in doing so, you will see an increase in productivity, performance, satisfaction, success, motivation and engagement, as well as cohesion, emotional intelligence and strategic alignment.

In essence, The Mind Strength Method is good for business.

Dr Lowinger talked delegates through the following four steps:

  • Awareness of your fight or flight driven thoughts, feelings and actions
  • Awareness of your mission, purpose, strategic goals and values
  • Embrace a mind strength toolkit to build resilience
  • Move forward aligned to high performing actions

She continued, that it’s important to recognise that the situation isn’t always in our control.

“But, where the power lies, is we have a choice of how we respond to that situation,” she explained.

According to Dr Lowinger, perceived threat, or worry, takes us into a primitive part of the brain, whereby logical thinking shuts down, we disconnect and we get stressed and agitated.

“It’s easier to stand up to unhelpful thoughts and actions when you have clarity of an alternative path,” she added.

“We get caught up in the what and the how. We miss the why, our purpose and values.”

Dr Lowinger said there are several steps we can take to embrace a mind strength toolkit to build resilience:

  • Notice the worry story
  • Take long, slow out breaths
  • Bring your mind back to the present moment
  • Acknowledge thoughts and feelings
  • Sit with uncertainty
  • Move from worry to problem solving
  • Engage mood boosters

Dr Lowinger also encouraged delegates to build mindful moments into their day, even if it’s just sitting in a chair, stopping and practicing mindfulness of breath.

NIBA would like to thank Dr Jodie Lowinger for contributing an incredibly insightful, and critically important, session to the 2020 NIBA Virtual Convention.
